Jewel Changi welcomes new F&B and retail shops

Singapore. After two years of forced closures due to the pandemic, Jewel Changi Airport is finally recovering. The easing of international travel has drastically increased foot traffic in the area according to James Fong, chief executive of Jewel Changi Airport Development.

During Christmas 2022, over 345,00 people visited the famous 1.7 billion retail complex. This is the highest number recorded since COVID-19. Before the pandemic, Jewel received around 300,000 visitors daily.

The sales at Jewel in December 2022 were also 8% higher compared to December 2019. Even ticket sales for Canopy Park and other attractions went up to around 80% of 2019 levels.

Among the top-performing retail shops at the location in 2022 include Pokemon Centre, Foot Locker, Coach, and Nike. For food establishments, Burger & Lobster, Beauty in the Pot, Shake Shack, and Jumbo Seafood were top favourites.

There’s also an increase in occupancy of the Yotelair at Jewel, which has 130 rooms.

According to Fong, Jewel is expected to continue seeing more local and international visitors this year.

“We are encouraged by the rebound and foresee a positive outlook, especially with key markets like China also starting to ease travel restrictions,” he said.

“December 2022 was a good season for our retailers as many achieved record sales… We hope to see a steady increase in visitor numbers and sales in 2023.

Jewel opened in 2019 to large crowds but closed in 2020 to curb the spread of cover. A year later, it closed again for a month due to rising cover cases linked to one staff.

In 2021 and 2022, Jewel welcomed 74 new tenants, with 54 opening their shops in 2022. This includes Converse, Lovet, The Hainan Story, and Don Don Donki, among many others.

Retail staff in the Jewel are also seeing the difference in foot traffic.

“Last time, there could be no one passing by the store at all. Now, you can really see the difference,’ said Converse outlet supervisor Miko Khoh.

Jewel currently has over 250 shops open, and the mall is expected to reach its full occupancy of over 280 shops in the coming months.

“2024 will mark Jewel’s fifth year, and we hope to roll out exciting campaigns to thank all of our fans for their years of support,” said Fong.
