The National Day Rally has been a consistent annual event since 1966. The only time it was halted was in 2020, when PM Lee made a speech in Parliament because of COVID-19.
Last year, PM Lee delivered his speech in a Mediacorp studio in front of 2,000 attendees. It was also broadcasted via Zoom and television.

In last year’s speech, PM Lee announced the measures he would take to aid lower-wage workers. Moreover, he also addressed issues about racial and religious harmony, particularly the government’s plan to enact a Maintenance of Racial Harmony Act to consolidate existing laws that govern racial issues, as well as measures that focus on rehabilitation.
He also discussed Singapore’s pandemic situation. During that time, Singapore experienced a surge in cases, and PM Lee promised Singapore to move “step by step.”
